Advance

An advance is a kind of loan a songwriter gets from a publishing company when they sign a contract. It’s like a signing bonus to help them out financially. But there’s a catch: the songwriter has to “earn it back” with their future royalty income. The publishing company keeps the songwriter’s royalties until they’ve paid back the full amount of the advance.
