Copyright Act

The Copyright Act of 1976 is the rulebook for copyright in the US. It explains what copyright holders can do with their work (like “fair use”) and how long copyright lasts (usually based on the creator’s lifespan). This law protects music too, including songs, lyrics, and instrumental pieces. Recordings of songs have separate copyrights.
